Irvine - 29th April 2024

On the 29th of April 2024, the Golf Pairs Tour graced Ayrshire's golfing paradise once more, finding its home at The Irvine Golf Club. Despite the wet and windy weather, 194 golfers eagerly embraced the challenge presented by this James Braid designed course, which spans 6415 yards and boasts a par of 71. Known for its significance as a final qualifying venue for The Open Championship, the course posed a formidable test for all participants.

Amidst the challenging conditions, remarkable scores dotted the day's play. With 97 teams competing, the top 12 were separated by a mere 5 points. Chris Stirrat, carrying a handicap of 7, and Adam Ford, with a handicap of 20, claimed the victory by a single point, posting a total of 43. Their stellar front nine performance, highlighted by Chris's three birdies, laid the foundation for their triumph. Ally and Hugh Wilson secured second place with 42 points, followed by Fraser McJannett and Jason Cormack in third with 40 points. The competition intensified further as the subsequent five teams all finished on 39 points, requiring a countback to determine their rankings.

In the Gross Competition, Neil Rankin and Gary Harkins showcased exceptional skill, battling the adverse weather to accumulate an impressive 34 points. Gary's decisive birdie on the final hole secured their victory by a solitary point over Ryan Givens and Brian Flynn, with Lee Kirkland and Alan Watson claiming the third spot.

Noteworthy feats punctuated the day's events, with Christopher Prior and Sarah Hurry claiming the longest drive honors on Hole 11 for men and ladies, respectively. Chris Stirrat's precision on the 8th hole earned him the nearest the pin prize in the face of challenging conditions.

The Par 3 Competition, featuring only two such holes on the course, culminated in a close contest, with Kenneth Hankinson/Steve Wilson and Mark McCafferty/Gordon Cooley sharing the winners' accolade.

Despite the scarcity of opportunities on the par 3s and the demanding weather conditions, Calum Bisset, Gordon Cooley, and Kenny Hankinson managed to secure a two, each earning £88 vouchers.

Heartfelt gratitude is extended to all participants for their presence, with hopes that they found enjoyment in the day's proceedings. The Golf Pairs Team eagerly anticipates the next Scottish event, scheduled to unfold at Monifieth Golf Links on Sunday, the 5th of May.

Until then, farewell from the Golf Pairs Team.
