The Shire Singles - 14th March 2023

Wow, what a start to the season with our first singles event at the Shire golf club.

The unique Ballesteros designed course was the ultimate way to start our season.

The course has many unforgettable holes, often challenging you with a shot over water, and none more so than our 18th – where our course architect literally stamped his initial on our beautiful, serene part of England with an S-shaped lake, the ultimate challenge on one of the country’s most demanding closing holes.

Six par threes, six par fours, six par fives. No two consecutive holes of the same par, on either nine. Links holes, stadium-style Tour golf holes, and traditional British parkland holes, all immaculately presented.

It was a 7.30 start for our packed field of 135 golfers. Unfortunately the weather was more like a penguins paradise than a golfers dream with cold conditions and the odd wintery shower. Everyone was still all smiles and the weather soon cleared out for a lovely afternoon.

The course conditions along with the weather meant to scoring was hard going. Strong winds and super fast greens with water of plenty meant the best score of the day was 38 points. Well done to Max Edwards who achieved that feet.

Nearest the pin was on the 7th hole and was won by John Fulton.

Longest drive then followed on the 8th hole, the ladies was won by Georgia penketh and the men’s by Gary binns. Well done to all those players.
