Isle of Purbeck 2026
Share
Spectacular sea views on the front nine, sweeping National Trust countryside and the iconic Old Harry Rocks on the back, glorious sunshine, 120 golfers enjoying one of the most unique settings on the calendar, and a course with a genuinely fascinating history — the Isle of Purbeck served up a truly memorable day of Golf Pairs action.
Course Highlights
The Isle of Purbeck Golf Club was founded in August 1892, originally laid out as a 9-hole course. A properly historic venue with a fascinating story behind it:
- 1892 Foundation — Established as golf spread south from Scotland, taking advantage of the sweeping heath and coastal winds. Originally called Studland Bay Golf Club, with a modest clubhouse in an old corrugated hut near the present short 9-hole area.
- Early 1900s — The original 9-hole layout was significantly improved around 1904. Persistent rumours connect legendary architect Harry Colt to the early design, though definitive proof remains unestablished. The natural, terrain-focused routing certainly mirrors classic early design philosophies.
- The Enid Blyton Era — In the mid-20th century, past owners included distinguished medical consultant Dr. Kenneth Darrell-Waters and his famous wife, Enid Blyton — the legendary children's book author. They owned and managed the property during the 1950s and 1960s. Not many courses can claim a design-era link to one of the greats of children's literature!
The course itself offers two very different and equally memorable experiences. The front nine provides spectacular sea views, while the back nine offers beautiful views across the National Trust countryside, with the iconic Old Harry Rocks nearby. It really is a unique setting for a round of golf.
Weather Conditions
The sun was shining throughout, accompanied by a gentle breeze — the perfect setting for a day on the course. Players were also treated to some wonderful wildlife along the way, adding to the character and natural beauty of the surroundings.
Memorable Moments
Best Dressed honours went to Matthew Jones and Peter Beckenham — a properly turned-out pair and a worthy nod for bringing the look to match a proper occasion of a day.
Held twice a year, this event continues to be a much-loved fixture — bringing together golfers for a friendly and enjoyable day of competition, good company, and of course plenty of golf.
A special mention must also go to the friendly clubhouse, where everyone could relax, enjoy some refreshments, and share stories from the day.
