A Great Day of Golf at Alnwick Castle Golf Club
It was a fantastic day of golf at Alnwick Castle Golf Club, with players enjoying a challenging round, some excellent scoring and plenty of competition across the leaderboards.
A Club Steeped in History
Alnwick Castle Golf Club has a history stretching back to 1907, when the club first opened its doors. A number of possible locations around Alnwick were considered before Swansfield Park was selected as a suitable and available site. The original nine-hole course was designed by George Rochester, the professional at Alnmouth, and a dedicated clubhouse followed in 1911.
Today, the club is an 18-hole, par-70 parkland course, offering a memorable round in the beautiful Northumbrian countryside. The course measures around 6,200 yards from the back tees and is designed to provide a fair but comprehensive test of golf. Its mature parkland setting, natural hazards and mixture of par threes, fours and fives mean that accuracy and good course management are rewarded.
The layout gives each hole its own character, with the course making good use of the natural terrain rather than feeling like a series of repetitive holes. One of the standout challenges is the 12th hole, known as the “Lang Whang”, an uphill, left dog-leg par five finishing at a raised green. It is a hole where a well-managed par feels like a very good score.
Set close to Alnwick and surrounded by the historic Northumbrian landscape, the course provides an excellent combination of golfing challenge and scenery — making it a fitting venue for a competitive golf day.
