Authentic Links Golf at Weston-super-Mare
For those seeking a true taste of traditional links golf, Weston-super-Mare Golf Club delivered in every sense. Designed by the legendary Alister MacKenzie, this historic course offers one of the most authentic links experiences in England — combining coastal scenery with a layout that rewards creativity, precision, and smart shot-making.
A Classic Links Test
Set against the stunning coastline, Weston-super-Mare is a course that encourages golfers to think their way around. With firm, fast fairways and natural undulations, every shot requires careful consideration — exactly what you’d expect from a course of this pedigree.
Weather & Conditions
The day brought near-perfect links conditions. A gentle westerly breeze added to the challenge without overpowering play, encouraging players to shape shots and manage the course effectively.
Crucially, the course remained dry throughout, allowing the fairways to run firm and true — ideal for this style of golf.
Memorable Moments
One of the standout moments of the day came before a ball was even struck — with 171 golfers being informed at registration that mats would be in use. Despite the initial surprise, players embraced the challenge and got on with the job — a testament to the spirit of the Golf Pairs field.
Tournament Highlights
There was some excellent golf on display, with a standout performance from a father-and-son pairing, Michael & Matt Coombes, who produced a superb round of -1 gross, even with a double bogey on the card.
In the handicap competition, consistency proved key — with one team producing a steady front nine of 21 points, before accelerating on the back nine with 25 points to post a leading total of 46 points.
