Two days at one of English golf's most iconic venues — the legendary Old Course at Walton Heath. Over a century of championship history, some of the finest heathland golf anywhere in the world, and two days that produced fantastic scoring, brilliant winners, and a truly memorable overall race to the finish.

Day 1 of the GolfPairs event took players to one of England's true golfing treasures — the Old Course at Walton Heath. Consistently ranked among the world's finest inland courses, it has remained in the World's Top 100 since rankings began in 1938, and is widely regarded as the ultimate expression of heathland golf.

Founded in 1903, Walton Heath was designed by the legendary Herbert Fowler, whose philosophy was simple: reward imagination rather than brute strength. The course demands every shot in the bag, with firm-running fairways, strategic bunkering, and expansive heathland framed by vibrant purple heather. Despite being over 50 miles from the sea, it plays with a distinct links-like feel, encouraging low, running approaches whenever conditions allow.

The club's history is as rich as its golfing heritage. Five-time Open Champion James Braid served as the club professional for over 45 years, helping establish Walton Heath as one of the world's great championship venues. It is also the only golf club to have had a reigning monarch, King Edward VIII, as its Captain, while Sir Winston Churchill was a regular visitor.

Championship golf has long been part of Walton Heath's story. The Old Course hosted the 1981 Ryder Cup, numerous European Opens, the 2018 British Masters, and the 2023 AIG Women's Open — with many of golf's greatest names walking these fairways, from Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros to Nelly Korda and Charley Hull.

For GolfPairs competitors, the Old Course provided a memorable opening day. The opening stretch is notoriously demanding, while the closing holes are considered among the finest finishing sequences in championship golf. Success here comes from accuracy, patience, and smart course management far more than raw power. Scoring conditions remained a real test, and the course once again demanded thoughtful, strategic golf from tee to green.

Two days at one of the world's great championship venues came down to a really close finish at the top of the overall leaderboard.

Huge congratulations to David Oliver and Hugo Jacques, who took the Overall WHS title — a brilliantly consistent two-day performance backed up by their runners-up finish on Day 2, and enough to see them clear at the top of the combined standings.

A massive well played to Christian Hewson and James Edwards in the runners-up spot overall — Day 1 winners and consistent throughout the trip. A brilliant two days from the pair.
