Blazing sunshine, fairways brown and running for miles, some seriously low scoring, a father-and-son win at the top, and a hole-out eagle on the last that decided the Gross prize — Oswestry served up a memorable day of Golf Pairs action.

Course Highlights

Oswestry Golf Club is a well-established parkland course set in the rolling countryside on the outskirts of Oswestry, Shropshire. Founded in 1907, the 18-hole course features mature trees, gently undulating fairways, and well-maintained greens that provide an enjoyable yet challenging round for golfers of all abilities. With scenic views towards the Welsh borders and a welcoming clubhouse, it's a popular destination for golfers seeking a traditional golfing experience.

Weather Conditions

Clear blue skies all day, and hot, hot, hot. The fairways were brown and running for miles — proper firm and fast summer conditions that gave every player extra distance off the tee and rewarded anyone brave enough to take the driver on.

Memorable Moments

Best Dressed honours went to Andrew Hooper and Clive Jones — a properly turned-out pair and a worthy nod for bringing the look to match the sunshine.

It was also fantastic to welcome so many first-time Golf Pairs golfers to the event — a really great sign for the community, and a warm welcome from us to everyone joining us for the first time. We hope you had a brilliant day and we'll see you at the next one.

Tournament Highlights

With fairways hard and the ball travelling further than normal, it made for a genuinely low-scoring Golf Pairs event — the kind of day where good tee shots got rewarded twice.

The scoring headline came from a lovely story at the top of the leaderboard — the father-and-son pairing of David and Peter Garner put together a superb 46 points, with a brilliantly balanced round split perfectly down the middle — 23 on the front, 23 on the back. Individually, both players carded 34 points each — a proper team effort in every sense.

The Gross competition, meanwhile, was a really close contest decided on best back nine. Winners Andy Ferriday and Nicky Griest finished at +1 — sealed in the most dramatic way possible, with Nicky holing out on the last for an eagle 2. Not a bad way to nick a Gross title!

Winners

Huge congratulations to David and Peter Garner, who took the top spot with a superb 46 points — a really special result for a father and son to share.

In the runners-up spot were Robert Williams and Dai Ellis, matching the winning score on 46 points but coming up narrowly short on countback. A fantastic effort and desperately unlucky not to share the top spot.

Best Gross honours went to Andy Ferriday and Nicky Griest with a brilliant +1 — capped off in style by Nicky's eagle on the 18th.
