A Hidden Gem Delivers at Irvine Golf Club (Bogside)

Set on the stunning Ayrshire coastline, Irvine Golf Club (Bogside) once again proved why it’s regarded as one of Scotland’s true hidden gems. With its rich history, championship pedigree, and unmistakable links character, it provided the perfect stage for a fantastic day of Golf Pairs competition.

A Championship Links with Character

Often used by the R&A for Final Open Qualifying, Bogside is a classic James Braid design that blends traditional links golf with subtle heathland features.

The course is full of personality — from punishing gorse and heather-lined fairways to some of the fastest, truest greens in the region. Strategic play is essential, particularly on the shorter par 4s where position off the tee is everything. Add in a few blind shots, including the testing 14th hole, and you have a layout that keeps golfers thinking from start to finish.

Weather & Conditions

Players were treated to dry conditions, sunny spells, and a light coastal breeze — ideal for scoring and enjoying everything this fantastic course has to offer.

Memorable Moments

There were plenty of standout stories throughout the day:

Andrew Robson & Mike Lynch had quite the journey, battling traffic and even a puncture before finally arriving — only to tee it up in the final group of the day. Not only did they make it, but both also hit the green on the charity hole and contributed generously — a brilliant effort all round.

A moment to remember came on the final hole, where Sean McGinlay drove the 326-yard par-4 18th, before calmly rolling in the putt for a superb eagle finish.

Tournament Highlights

After a dramatic day of golf, the leaderboard couldn’t be separated at the top.

Despite their eventful journey, Andrew Robson (3.6) & Mike Lynch (6.8) produced a fantastic round to tie for first place on 45 points, alongside Gordon Cooley (11.1) & Mark McCafferty (15.8) — a testament to both resilience and quality golf.
